Privacy#

Below you can find a list of go-to alternatives for enshitified and privacy-intrusive apps/services:

  • app store (google play) > F-droid hosts FOSS apps

  • blog (wordpress) > static web pages generated via Sphinx and served via My WebApp (like this blog!)

  • communicators (whatsapp) > Signal (Molly via F-droid) or even better decentralised SimpleX, alternatively EU-based Wire

  • code (github) > codeberg or start your own forgejo instance

  • cloud (google contacts/calendar/docs/drive/photos, dropbox) > nextcloud will sync/store you data (files, calendars, contacts, photos), allow communication (Talk), co-working (docs, spreadsheets, presentations) and much more

  • domains (amazon, google) > OVH is EU-based and offers .ovh domains for 2€ (3€ renewal) annually

  • e-mail (google mail) > ???

  • hosting > YunoHost

  • search engine (google) > SearXNG, DuckDuckGo or Stract

  • social media > numerous alternatives supporting ActivityPub:

    • facebook > friendica

    • instagram > pixelfeld for photos, loops for short videos (tiktok alternative below)

    • twitter > Mastodon or GoToSocial

    • tiktok > loops

    • youtube > peertube

  • streaming (netflix) > Jellyfin

  • teaching > Moodle,

  • web browser (chrome, firefox) > Vivaldi or Zen Browser

  • video conferences (Zoom, Teams) > Nextcloud Talk or Jitsi Meet

Apps:

  • general apps (calendar, clock, files, launcher, messages, music, phone, recorder) > Fossify apps

  • authenticator > Aegis

  • books > Myrne

  • calendar/contact sync > Dav5

  • card/ticket manager (wallet) > Catima

  • maps > OSM or Organic Maps

  • multimedia (music, video) > vlc

  • music streamin (spotify) > tidal

  • podcasts > AntennaPod

  • radio > RadioDroid

Bonuses:

The idea is to expand every recommendation to a full post, hopefully starting with the most urgent ones. I’ll be recommending FOSS alternatives, especially apps that can be installed via F-droid and/or services that can be easily self-hosted.

Just keep in mind, those are my subjective preferences. You can see/propose changes in yachay repository.
